Thermoelectric coolers, also referred to as TEC or Peltier modules, are devices that convert electric power into a temperature differential. When supplied with 12V DC, one side of the module becomes hot while the other side becomes cold compared to the surrounding ambient temperature. This property allows them to be utilized for both heating and cooling purposes. Additionally, the temperature differential generated by these modules can also be harnessed to generate electricity.
To ensure the effective operation of Peltier modules, it is crucial to remove heat from the hot side. Upon activating the device, the hot side heats up rapidly, while the cold side cools below ambient temperature to a certain extent. However, if the heat from the hot side is not dissipated (by means of a heat sink or another suitable mechanism), the Peltier module will quickly reach a state of equilibrium and cease to function properly, possibly leading to internal damage. For optimal performance, we recommend using a large computer CPU heatsink or a block of metal to extract heat from the hot side. This ensures that the cold side achieves lower temperatures. In fact, we have successfully employed a computer power supply and CPU heatsink to the extent that the cold side became so cold that it was uncomfortable to touch with our fingers.
It is worth noting that we offer Peltier modules in various sizes, operating voltages, current consumption levels, number of layers, and temperature differentials. Operating Tips:Peltier Module
- Do not exceed Imax or Vmax when operating a module.
- Please carry out moisture protection options (sealing) in final application use.
- Life expectancy: 200,000 hours.
- Failure rate based on longtime testings: 0.2%.
- Important Note!! The heated side requires a heat sink all the time. “ Do not run this device with a power supply for more than a few seconds without a heatsink mounted to the device! ”
